The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking is a joint initiative between the EU, European countries and private partners to develop a World Class Supercomputing Ecosystem in Europe, to Build a European Network of HPC Expertise.

With funding from the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), EuroCC and CASTIEL will build a European network of 33 national HPC competence centres. The two projects will bridge the existing HPC skills gaps while promoting cooperation and the implementation of best practices across Europe, leading the way in European Supercomputing.

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking allows the EU and EuroHPC participating countries to coordinate their efforts and pool their resources with the objective of deploying in Europe a world-class exascale supercomputing infrastructure, able to perform more than one trillion (1018) operations per second, and developing innovative supercomputing technologies and applications .

By making Europe a world leader in high performance computing (HPC), the EuroHPC JU seeks to provide computing solutions, improving cooperation in advanced scientific research, boosting industrial competitiveness, and ensuring European technological and digital autonomy.

Within the EuroCC project under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 (H2020), 33 member and associated participating countries are tasked with establishing a single National Competence Centre (NCC) in the area of high-performance computing (HPC) in their respective countries. These NCCs will coordinate activities in all HPC-related fields at the national level and serve as a contact point for customers from industry, science, (future) HPC experts, and the general public alike.

Funding and coordination

The EuroCC project is funded 50 percent through H2020 (EuroHPC Joint Undertaking [JU]) and 50 percent through national funding programs within the partner countries.

The EuroCC activities are coordinated by the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS). The project aims to elevate the participating countries to a common high level in the fields of HPC, HPDA and artificial intelligence (AI). To this end, the EuroCC project will establish National Competence Centres (NCCs) in the participating countries, which will be responsible for surveying and documenting the core HPC, HPDA, and AI activities and competencies in their respective countries. Ultimately, the goal is to make HPC available to different users from science, industry, public administration, and society.

The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is a legal and funding entity, created in 2018 and located in Luxembourg.

HPC Competence Center in GREECE

GRNET is coordinating the efforts of a consortium of partners in Greece with the overall objective to create an HPC competence Centre in Greece in order to enable the efficient uptake of HPC technologies with the three-fold goal to:

  • advance competitiveness in research,
  • improve effectiveness of government services and
  • promote innovation in industry.

To reach these goals, the HPC Competence Centre in Greece, will aim to:

  • put in place appropriate management structures in particular in relation to providing effective services to government and industry,
  • build a high-level support team that will provide training programs and user support, code development, co-design and integration of local users and SMEs into the European landscape,
  • pursue common collaborative projects with other HPC Centres,
  • ensure awareness creation
